The Race

Three Ways to Run It

The flyer specifies the race is open to beginners, seasoned pros, and relay teams. Pick the format that suits your training.

The Beginner

Never run a 10K before? This is the one to start with. The 3 PM start gives you the cooler edge of the afternoon, and the route stays inside the Georgetown grid — flat, paved, and lined with spectators. Walk-run is welcome. The goal is to finish, not to win.

First-timer friendly

The Seasoned Pro

If you've raced GOBSA, CARIFTA, or any of the Independence road races, this one is for you — sanctioned by the Athletics Association of Guyana, run on a flat fast Georgetown course, in front of the home crowd, on the country's biggest jubilee weekend. Course PB territory.

Solo competitive

The Relay Team

Bring the office, the running club, the alumni group. Split the 10 km between teammates, hand off the baton, and turn it into a celebration as much as a race. Team size and leg splits will be confirmed by the organisers — watch their pages for the details.

Why This 10K Matters

This isn't just another road race. It's one of ten national sports tournaments the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport launched on April 30, 2026 to mark Guyana's 60th anniversary of independence — and athletics is the headline.

Main Street, Georgetown

Main Street is the spine of central Georgetown — a wide, flat tree-lined avenue running parallel to the Atlantic, dotted with colonial-era heritage buildings, embassies, and the Pegasus skyline at its northern end.

The exact 10K course will be announced by the Athletics Association of Guyana closer to race day.

What to Bring & How to Prep

Practical advice for everyone — from the first-timer to the seasoned road racer.

Government ID

Bring an ID to collect your race pack. Organisers usually require it at registration check-in.

Water Bottle

3 PM in May means strong tropical sun. Aid stations are typical on a 10K but bring your own bottle to be safe.

Proper Trainers

Running shoes — not casual sneakers, not flip-flops. Main Street is paved but seams and broken patches are real.

Sunscreen & Cap

Even in the late afternoon, the equatorial sun is no joke. Apply 30+ SPF and wear a cap or visor.

National Colours

Green, gold, red, black, white — this is a Diamond Jubilee race. Wear the flag if you can.

Emergency Contact

Write a contact number on your bib or stash one in your phone case — standard safety practice for road races.

Watch the Weather

May falls in the long rainy season. A quick afternoon shower is possible — but the race goes on.

Arrive Early

Get to Main Street by 2:00 PM at the latest. Find your team, warm up, queue at the start gate.

Common Questions

Diamond Jubilee 10K FAQ

Answers based on the official flyer issued by the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport on May 6, 2026 and the broader Diamond Jubilee Sports Tournament programme. Will be updated as organisers confirm more details.

When is the race?

Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 3:00 PM Guyana time (UTC−4). Mark your calendar — this falls four days after Independence Day and right at the tail of the Diamond Jubilee programme.

Where does it start?

Both the start AND the finish are at the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport at Main Street, Georgetown. Spectators stay in one place to see runners off and welcome them home.

Who can enter?

The race is open to beginners, seasoned pros, and relay teams — verbatim from the official flyer. Whether you've never raced before or you're chasing a course PB, this is for you.

How much does it cost?

The Ministry's announcement says "see flyer for more details", but registration fees and the entry portal have not yet been published. Watch Athletics Guyana and MOCYS for the official link.

How big are the relay teams?

Team size and leg distances have not been confirmed. Most road relays in Guyana run 2-4 person teams splitting the 10K, but wait for the Athletics Association of Guyana to publish the official rules before locking in a team.

Who organises the race?

It's a joint effort by the Athletics Association of Guyana (the sole national governing body for athletics, founded 1948) and the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport — under the umbrella of the 60th Independence Diamond Jubilee Sports Tournament.

What is the route?

The official course map has not been released. AAG road events in central Georgetown typically use Main Street, the seawall, Carifesta Avenue, and Vlissengen Road circuits. Expect it to stay close to the Ministry — both ends of the race are there.

Will roads be closed?

Rolling road closures with police escort are standard for sanctioned 10Ks. Drivers in central Georgetown should expect delays around Main Street and the surrounding blocks between roughly 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM on May 30.

What should I wear?

Light, breathable kit suited to 28-32°C and humid. Wear national colours if you can — green, gold, red, black, white. Trainers (not sneakers), a sweat-wicking top, cap or visor, sunglasses if you have them.

What should I bring on race day?

Government ID for pack collection, registration confirmation, refillable water bottle, sunscreen, cap, emergency contact written somewhere accessible, and a small dry bag for valuables at the start.

Is May 30 a public holiday?

No — Independence Day (May 26) is the gazetted public holiday. May 30 is a regular Saturday but Georgetown will still be in full Diamond Jubilee festival mode.

Is there prize money?

The Ministry confirmed (April 30, 2026) that participating organisations are receiving sponsorship support. Specific prize structures — overall winners, age categories, fastest team — have not yet been published. Watch organiser channels.

Can spectators come?

Yes, free of charge. The start/finish area on Main Street is shaded by mature trees and easy to access from anywhere in central Georgetown. Bring water and pack out your trash.

Will it be livestreamed?

The Ministry has confirmed that the finals of the Diamond Jubilee Sports Tournament will be livestreamed on the Ministry's social platforms. Whether the road relay specifically gets a stream has not been announced. Follow facebook.com/MOCYSGuyana on race day.

What else is happening that week?

A packed Diamond Jubilee programme: Guyana Festival May 15-17, Guyana Carnival peaking May 26, the Independence Volleyball Tournament May 23, and historical reenactments at the Indian Arrival Monument on May 30.

How do I follow updates?

Athletics Association of Guyana on Facebook, Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport on Facebook. We'll update this page as registration details, course maps, and prize structures are confirmed.
