When to visit Guyana. Two seasons + many festivals.
Guyana has two dry + two wet seasons overlapping across the country. The big short-dry window (September–November) is ideal for the interior. February's Mashramani and Easter's Rupununi Rodeo are the marquee cultural draws.

The essentials.
The dry seasons (best for interior travel)
September to November is the prime window for the Rupununi, Iwokrama and Kaieteur — roads passable, wildlife concentrates near remaining water, and rivers are low. February to April is the second dry window — covers Mashramani (Feb 23), Phagwah (March), and the Easter Rupununi Rodeo. Best for festivals + interior combined.
The wet seasons (great for arapaima + lush forest)
May to August is the long wet season — high water connects rivers and lagoons in the Rupununi, perfect for boat-based wildlife trips and arapaima fishing. Roads to the interior become unreliable. December to January is the short wet — a great window for Christmas in Guyana traditions (pepperpot, garlic pork, ginger beer).
Festival timing 2026
Mashramani (Republic Day) Feb 23 — Guyana's biggest street parade. Phagwah (Holi) March 3. Easter weekend April 3-6 — Bartica Regatta + Rupununi Rodeo + kite-flying nationwide. Independence Day May 26 — 60th Diamond Jubilee in 2026. Diwali Nov 8 — Dharmic Sabha East Coast motorcade. Christmas Dec 25.
Picking your dates
If your priority is wildlife: late September to early November. If your priority is festivals: late February + Easter. If you want both: early November for green-season wildlife + a late-November Diwali tail. Avoid: mid-June to early August (worst road conditions) unless you're doing exclusively boat-based trips.
